His wife was Sally Martin, who he married on 20 FEB 1782 in Albermarle County, Virginia. Their seven known children were Thornton (1782-<1817), Susanna (1786->1850), Alijah (1788->1817), Sarah (1790-?), Thomas 5 (1792-1858), Nancy (1794->1817) and Joseph M (1797-1826).
