Meredith Walker ancestry Message Meredith Walker family tree — Jan 2022

Though I would reach out to you. Have just recently learned of the Bowie connection with James Motheral Walker of Senatobia, though Google and DNR Match for Max Bowie. My great grandfather was James Motheral Walkers youngest brother. I thought James Motheral Walker's family ended with his children since none of them married. I have since learned that that may not be so. I do remember meeting Hugh Arthur Walker when I was a child. From my family, he was absent for most of his life, but made connections with my great aunts before his death. James Motheral's wife and daughter were both committed to the state hospital while young related to psychiatric illnesses. His other son William died young while living with my great grandfather (I do not know cause). We knew little of James history as an adult other than he moved from DeSoto County to Senatobia and worked as a farmer. I do know some history of the Walker Family if you have any interest.

I can tell by your web site that you have done extensive research into the Walker family, and I may not have much to add. James moved from Franklin Tn with his widowed mother Mary Motheral Walker and his other sibling John Allen, Mary Jane, Joseph F, Katherine Ann and Joel Philips. James's father Joel Walker lived in Centerville, Tn before moving to Franklin. He was a physician but more active in Tennessee politics as a senator. He served as Speaker of the Senate from 829-1831. He died in 1884 after developing pneumonia campaigning for the Whig party. Mary's father was John Motheral. He farmed in Franklin, TN. Their home site still stands as the Motheral Moran House. John Motheral and Joel Walker are buried in the Motheral Family Cemetery close to the house currently a subdivision. After Joel died, Mary moved her family to DeSoto County MS We do not know why she chose to leave her family in TN and settle in MS. Mary's sister, Catherine Motheral moved to Shannon MS after marrying Sammual Shannon. She likely lived with her sister after moving until her home was built in DeSoto County. During the civil war Mary moved back in with her sister since she was left alone. John Allen married and moved to Selma AR and died at Antietam, Mary Jane and Katherine married, Joseph died young, James and Joel were in civil war in DeSoto County after Grant invaded Memphis. Mary died in 1862 in Shannon of pneumonia and is buried in the Shannon Cemetery.

James served in the civil war from from 1861-1863. He started as Lt in the Horn Lake Volunteers of the Mississippi 9th Infantry Co. E. It reformed to the Mississippi 10th and was Col when he resigned due to dysentery in 1863. He was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh.

I think his life was hard after returning to Mississippi after the war. As you know, he is listed as living with the Stokes family in 1970 census as a farmer. Mary Ann Gray Driver Stokes is the mother of Ellen Driver. Mary Gray was widowed by Larry Driver when Ellen was born. She was raised by her grandfather, William Gray. Ellen Gray married Edmond Rutland who died in Rock Island IL civil war prison after being captured in Chattanooga. She later married James and they moved to Senatobia, MS. She later was committed to the Insane Asylum of Mississippi, where she died in 1901. They had 3 children as listed in previous note. After James death, William Gray died young. Mary was also admitted to the Insane Asylum after the death of her brother.

There is a JW Bowie listed on census from 1880 with James Motheral Walker
