Notes

Note 1

John W Walker 18 Jul 1854 -3 Oct 1882

Hickman Pioneer Oct. 6, 1882

The saddest item of news we have ever had to set before our readers was occasioned by the accidental killing of Mr. John W. Walker. On last Tuesday evening about 2 o'clock, the deceased and a young colored boy were engaged in sawing off a log from a very large poplar tree, on the Walker farm a few miles up the river from Centreville. It appears that the tree had been felled on a hill side and Mr. Walker and the negro boy commenced sawing the tree in saw-log lengths. Mr. Walker took his position on the lower side of the tree and both commenced sawing and continued until the log was completely severed, and in an instant the log commenced to roll down the hill. Mr. Walker, who, as stated, was on the lower side, attempted to get out of the way, ran backward to escape the eminent danger, when his foot was caught in a crooked limb of the lap of the tree, and in an instant one end of the log was rolling upon his foot. He was thrown backward and the ponderous log sped over its victim from his feet on and over the whole length of his body. He was heard to utter but two words "Lord""Lord" and after a moment of conscious agony, his body was a shapeless and lifeless mass. He was utterly crushed.

Our readers will remember him as a young man of stern and firm convictions; usually quite reticent but at all times unswerving in his adherence to what he conceived to be right. We know that the whole community deeply sympathized with his near relations in this their hour of great affliction.
