His wife was Charity Banner, who he married in 1780 in Stokes County, North Carolina. Their nine known children were Mary (1781->1801), Elizabeth (1784-1845), Eleanor (1787-1839), John (1788-1863), Stephen (1789-?), William (1790-?), Charity (1790-?), Ruth (1792-?) and Nancy (1793->1818).
