Personal and Family Information

John was born in 1785 in Burke County, Georgia, the son of Rezin Bowie and Elve Ap-Catesby Jones.

He died on 22 Jun 1859 in Arkansas.

He had three marriages/partners. His first wife was Nancy Snodgress?, who he married in 1806 in maybe Catahoula Parish, La. Their five known children were Mary (1810-1897), Nancy (1816-1896), Sarah (1812-1863), Rezin Pleasant (c1815-<1853) and Matilda (1819-?).

His second wife was Mary C Oliphant, who he married in ABT 1830. The place has not been found. Their only known child was Harriett E (1831->1860).

His third wife was America A. Watkins, who he married on 8 AUG 1831 in Lafourche Parish, La. Their three known children were Martha (1833-c1913), John R (1835-1858) and James W (1838-1864).

BE CAREFUL HERE!

"The Bowies and their Kindred" only very loosely ties this James back to the Maryland Bowies. Page 258 and 259 statements such as "In the absence of documentary evidence, family tradition must be accepted..." and "If such was the case" and "It is not know where...but seems to be".

"The Rezin Bowie Family of Louisiana" by Virginia Lobdell Jennings is a much more scholarily research of this James Bowie and his descendants. Wills and land records are used to better document the names, familys, places and dates. At the same time comparasions are made with the claims in WW Bowie book.
