Tunstall was born about 1764 in Virginia, the son of Daniel Shelton and Lettice Young.

He died before 1840. The place is not known.

His wife was Elizabeth Francis Payne, who he married on 15 DEC 1794 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Their nine known children were Fredrick L. (1800->1880), Tunstall W Jr (1804-?), Temperance (c1805-?), Abraham Madison (1808-1880), William Preston (1813-1880), Elizabeth G. (c1814-?), Mathew Clay (1817-1900), Oliver Harrison (c1820-?) and Tabitha Adelaide (1825-1900).
