Holman was born in Dec 1842 in Alabama, the son of Moses Waters Simmons and Harriet Renfro.

He died after 1900 in probably Texas.

His wife was Caroline Cogburn, who he married in ABT 1872 in Probably Alabama. Their three known children were Edward Hamilton (1873-1934), Benjamin Bib (1879-1953) and Henry Freeman (1881-1930).

The 5th Cavalry Battalion of Hilliard's Legion

The 5th Cavalry Battalion was organized with five companies at Montgomery on 25 June 1862.

It merged into the 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment on 30 December 1862. Each company,

"A" through "E", retained its original letter designation.
