Hi Peggy, I have a little info for you, if you are still collecting. I finally found a tombstone for Nathaniel Hawthorn Simmons in Grayson County Texas. Turns out the town he was in, "Preston Bend" was put underwater when Lake Texoma was formed in the 1940's. He was moved to higher ground by the government to a cemetery of yhe family's choice, as was his mother who I think is there also. I wonder who the government contacted. Anyway, a woman had taken a tombstone pic and posted to Genweb but never to find a grave until a few months ago, where I recently found it.
I also located a plat map of Preston Bend from 1908. This is not a firm date, someone else posted the map on a Preston Bend history site and noted in a caption they thought 1908. NH Simmons is still listed on the map but he did die in 1889 so maybe his kids were still farming it. His land touched the Red River and faced Oklahoma on one side from what I can tell. I think the river swelled and became a lake and swallowed it up. Long after his death, but I'm trying to find out how long his kids may have farmed it.
Hope this info is interesting! Fran Simmons Preston
