Elijah was born about 1772 in Anson County, North Carolina, the son of James Terry and Anne Robards.
He died about 1842 in Autauga County, Alabama.

His wife was Mary Ann Prickett, who he married in 17 DEC 1799 in Richmond County, North Carolina. Their nine known children were Mary Collingsworth (1812-<1875), James P. (-<1836), William R (c1810-?), Tod R. (c1810-?), John K (c1810-?), Walter L (c1810-?), Eli (-<1836), Ann (c1810-?) and Appia C (c1810-?).
