He died on 28 Sep 1812 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia.
His wife was Mary Mahoney Luckie, who he married on 2 DEC 1769 in Rowan County, North Carolina. They had no known children.

On October 22, 1775, the NC Provincial Congress created the 2nd Rowan County Regiment of Militia, and soon thereafter they commissioned Robert Holmes as a Captain under Col. Adlai Osborne.
On May 9, 1777, the NC General Assembly created Burke County and soon thereafter they commissioned Robert Holmes as a Captain under Col. Charles McDowell in the newly-created Burke County Regiment of Militia.
In early 1779, Robert Holmes was promoted to Major under Col. Charles McDowell in the Burke County Regiment of Militia, replacing Hugh Brevard who had recently been promoted to Lt. Colonel, who in turn replaced Lt. Colonel William Porter, who resigned.
In the 2Q of 1780, Robert Holmes was promoted to Lt. Colonel under Col. Charles McDowell in the Burke County Regiment of Militia, replacing Lt. Col. Hugh Brevard, who had resigned. Lt. Col. Robert Holmes led part of the Burke County Regiment at the battle of Ramseur's Mill on June 20, 1780, and at the battle of Guilford Court House on March 15, 1781.
In the 2Q of 1781, Robert Holmes was promoted to second Colonel, alongside Col. Charles McDowell, in the Burke County Regiment of Militia, replacing Col. William Sharpe who had resigned. Avaialble records indicate that he retained this position until the end of the war in 1783.
