John was born in 1710 in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England, the son of unknown parents.

He died on 1 Jan 1772 in Rowan County, North Carolina.

His wife was Jennet Wilson, who he married in 1736 in Augusta, Virginia, American Colonies. Their four known children were Robert (1737-1812), Richard (1738-1818), Margaret (c1742-1800) and James (1747-1815).
