Samuel Woods, was born Feb, 17, 1776 in North Carolina and died Dec. 4, 1840 in Benton Co., AR. He is buried in the Woods Cemetery located three miles east of Bentonville (found out in 2001 it is in Little Flock, ARK)

Samuel was the son and seventh child of Captain Samuel Woods who came to this country from Ireland as a young child and settled in North Carolina, Captain Samuel served as a captain in McDougald's Corp and commanded a company at the Battle of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War.

Samuel was married to Anna Purivance in 1796. They moved to Preble Co., Ohio, and then in 1815-1816 they sold their land in Ohio. In 1820 he received a grant of land from the state of TN., on the Obion River. In 1832, Samuel and his wife Anna accompanied by his sons, David, Samuel P., and William H., and other members of his family came to a location that became Benton Co., Ark., in 1836.
They lived in Rogers and Pea Ridge area.

Records show that many of the early Woods were farmers and teachers and that several were members of the Presbyterian church of which Samuel was an elder.
The children of Samuel and Anna were: John P., b. 2, Sep 1797; d. prior to 1847. Margaret, b. 11 Feb. 1799, d. unkown; Jane, b. 20 sep 1800, d. 21 Oct 1821; Mary, b. 11 May, 1802, d. 10 Mar 1832; Martha, b. 19 Jun 1804, d. 6 may 1861; David Milton, b. 24 Dec 1805, d. 20 Aug 1866. His death was due to injuried received during the Civil War when bushwackers beat him unconcious and burned the bottoms of his feet in an attempt to make him reveal where he had his money hidden. By the time this incident occured he had spent all his money on support of the families of two of his sons and three daughter. His two oldest sons and his three sons-in-law were with the Southern forces and their familes were living with David and his wife.; Nancy,b.1 Sep 1808 in Ohio, d. 4 Mar 1859 in Benton County, AR; Samuel Purviance, b. 26 dec 1809 in Ohio, d. 13 Oct 1882 and is buried in the Woods Cemetery in Benton Co., AR. He married Eliza Greaves Dickson in 1831.

The History of Benton County, ARK, (J. Dickson Black) page 19: the Woods settlement started when Samuel and William Woods settled three miles east of Bentonville in 1832. They both raised large families, who in time settled close by. His oldest son, John P. Woods, married and remained in Preble Co., OH.
