His wife was Louisa Ellen Grave, who he married in 1859 in Alabama. Their seven known children were William G (1861-?), Mary Susan (1863-?), John D (1870-?), Fannie E (1873-?), David Ames (1875-?), Annie (1878-?) and Addie (1878-?).
