Perry was born about 1776 in Virginia, the son of John Flynt and Catherine Perry.

He died on 10 MAY 1851 in Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama.[Note 2]

His wife was Martha Halbert, who he married on 11 NOV 1797 in Stokes County, North Carolina. Their nine known children were Elizabeth (1798-1856), John Halbert (1801-1861), Tarpley (1805-1881), Amasa (1817-1877), Julia (1819-1883), Jeremiah (1805-1870), Josephine Annie (1810-1897), Pendleton (<1811-1839) and Norris (1824-?).
