Townsend was a merchant in dry goods and also held several civic positions. He was treasurer of Elmore County in 1874 and alderman of the West Ward of the town of Wetumpka in 1877. He was commioned as Wetumpka's postmaster in 1884, an office that he held for nearly a decade.
