I keep a "cheat sheet" to help identify Dickson family members. Joseph Lawrence (J. L.) Dickson (b. 1817 d. 1868) was partners with Stirman in retail business in Fayetteville. J. L. was the one who wrote the journal. His father was Major Ephraim D. Dickson (b. 1787 Mecklinburg Co. NC d. 1852 Ben Co Ark).
