James was born on 13 May 1801 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the son of James Simmons and Elizabeth Gillenwaters.
He died before Jun 1880. The place is not known.
His wife was Sally Gillenwaters, who he married in ABT 1830 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Their ten known children were Mary (1832-?), John (1834-?), Thomas (1836-?), Nancy (1838-?), James T (1839-1870), Rachael (1841-?), William A (1843-1905), Martha (1844-?), Clay (1845-?) and Sarah (1849-?).
