Portia Kellogg Hoekstra, 94, of Springfield, Illinois, died at 10:35 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center.
Portia was born on September 16, 1920 in Evanston, IL, the daughter of John Kellogg and Marguerite Theobald Lloyd Rich. She married Dr. Andrew Hoekstra in Chicago, IL in 1940; he preceded her in death in 1993.
Portia earned her bachelor's degree in Education from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI and her master's degree in English Literature from Sangamon State University. She taught Grammar and Composition at Lincoln Land Community College for ten years and volunteered as a Librarian in Jacksonville, IL. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, a past member of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, St. Frances Light of Love Prayer Community, National Council for Christians and Jews, Earthbeat Drumming Circle, League of Women Voters, Great Books Club, 3rd Order Dominicans, and the Chavarot Group. Portia enjoyed learning, reading, cooking, gardening, canning, writing plays and short stories.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Peter Hoekstra; infant son, James Hoekstra; granddaughter, Katie Hoekstra; brother, John Rich and sister, Margaret Weimer.
She is survived by her son, John (wife, Suzanne) Hoekstra of Portland, ME; daughters, Andrea (husband, Arthur Molin) Hoekstra of Seattle, WA, Anna (husband, Robert) Jordan of Gainesville, FL, Margaret Coletti of Boston, MA, Elizabeth (husband, Ted) Hoffmann of Hendersonville, NC, Mary Joanna Hoekstra of Springfield, and Catherine (husband, Rudolfo) Martinez of Stockton, CA; ten grandchildren, Kathryn Therese, Michael, Andrew John, Jessica, Gina, Jennifer, Gabrielle, Aaron, Chessa, and Andrew; six great-grandchildren, Layla, Noa, Gabriella, Alexandria, Zack, and Zane; several nieces and nephews; and one cousin.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 11, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.
Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday May 12, 2015 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 245 N. Amos, Springfield with Rev. Robert J. Jallas, celebrant.
Burial will be follow at Calvary Cemetery.
