His wife was Mary Ella Simmons, who he married on 19 FEB 1852 in Talladega, Talladega, Alabama. Their seven known children were Robert E (1855-1876), Eliza J (1858-?), Felix R (c1860-1898), Alice Virginia (1862-1940), James H (1864-1875), Edward H (1868-1925) and Josephus Virgil (1873-1934).
