John was born in 1831 in Tennessee, the son of Hervey Woods and Cecelia Melinda Hall.

He died on 13 May 1906 in Warren County, Kentucky.

His wife was Martha Allen Mosley, who he married in ABT 1855 in Mississippi. Their five known children were Thomas Rawlings (1862-1883), Elizabeth Moseley (1865-1967), John Golding (1867-1948), Mildred W (1868-1947) and Martha (1868-1963).
