Oliver was born on 15 Oct 1784 in Madison County, Kentucky, the son of Samuel Woods and Margaret Holmes.

He died in 1863 in Appanoosa County, Iowa.

His wife was Nancy Haynes, who he married on 1 DEC 1807 in Williamson County, Tennessee. Their five known children were Samuel Newton (1808-1848), John Blackburn (1811-1884), Nancy Louisa (1812-1903), Margaret Marie (1815-1895) and Andrew Pinckney (1821-1887).
