First child of James Dickson and Agnes Nancy Moore. His fraternal grandfather was Revolutionary War Gen. Joseph Dickson and his maternal grandfather was Col. William Moore, also an American Revolutionary War soldier.

Married Catherine "Caty" Thompson (1798-1834) in Sumner County, Tennessee, 31 Aug 1816.

Served with Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812 - Captain, 1st Reg't. West Tennessee Volunteers Mounted Gunman.

A second son, James Azariah Dickson, was born 04 Aug 1822 in Tennessee, and died 01 Apr 1824 in Tennessee.
