Joe Coleman Jefferson. He was born in the Jefferson community of Bentonville to James Harvey Jefferson and Vivian Davis Jefferson. He graduated from Bentonville High School, Class of 1935. Joe served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as an armaments instructor on B-25 bombers. He managed Gus's News Shop for many years, and later was the manager of the hardware and automotive departments for the Walton Family Center in Bentonville.
Joe was always active in community and church affairs. He served on the board of Helping Hands and was a member of the Bentonville Kiwanis Club and was past commander of American Legion Post 77, in Bentonville. Joe was a longtime member of the Bentonville Nazarene Church, where he served on its board, as well as in other capacities. He was an avid collector of stamps, advertising pens and hats and was great at math and figures. Joe never met a stranger and enjoyed traveling.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Steven Jefferson, and two sisters, Nannie Mae Williamson and Emma Lou Jefferson.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years[Ellen Mae Sooter 1921-2013], a son, two brothers, one sister, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.
