Notes

Note 1

McGILL, Mittie PEEL - Mrs. Mittie Peel McGill, widow of the late Lon H. McGill, widely known attorney, died at the family home on West Twelfth Street, Bentonville Sunday afternoon at the age of 68 years.

Following the death of her husband on July 16th Mrs. McGill suffered a nervous breakdown from which she never recovered. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 4:30 at the First Presbyterian Church, the Rev. A.W. Henderson officiating, assisted by Rev. Dana Dawson of Fort Smith. Friends of years standing filled the church to its capacity and the floral tributes were many and beautiful. The 3 sons, Lon H., Billy and Berry McGill, who came from California three weeks ago to be with their father in his last hours, were unable to return for their mother's funeral.

Nine children survive her. Mrs. S.C. Bohart and Mrs. Bennett Dickson of Fayettville; J.T. McGill and Mrs. Raymond Davis of Bentonville; Lon H. McGill of Los Angeles; Billy and Berry McGill of Needles, California; Charles McGill of Fort Smith and Sam McGill of Jefferson City. A daughter, Marguerite, died some years ago. Mrs. McGill is also survived by two brothers, D.W. Peel of Bentonville, F.W. Peel of Fayetteville and by four sisters: Mrs. Alice Vance of Peirce City, Mo., Mrs. W.E. Anderson of San Benito, Texas and Mrs. N.E. Bowden of Tulsa, Okla. {only three named}. Also by six grandchildren, James McGill Bohart, Lon, Dwight and Marguerite Dickson of Fayetteville and Betty Lou and Mary Ellen McGill of Jefferson City, Mo. Mittie Peel was born at Carrollton, Ark. Jan 17, 1863.

She was a daughter of the late Col. S.W. Peel and Mary Berry Peel. At an early age she moved with her parents to Bentonville and spent the remainder of her life here except for short periods of residence in Little Rock and Clarksvile. On December 26, 1881 she was married in Bentonville to Lon H. McGill, the late Rev. Peter Carnahan performing the ceremony. For many years Mrs. McGill was a member of the Christian Church of Bentonville. She had been in ill health some time before her husband passed away and suffered a collapse at his death from which she could not recover. She fell asleep in the same gentle way that her husband did so sort a time ago.
