The advertisments tell us that this was the last year Augusta had an operator handling all telephone calls. Numbers had one to three digits, or you could just ask for a person or business by name.

In September 1957, the beginning of this school year, national and international attention was given Little Rock Central High School when Governor Orval Faubus used the National Guard to prevent nine black students from entering the all white school. On September 20, Faubus removed the guardsmen on the order of a federal judge, and on Sept 23, violent crowds gathered in protest at the school. The next day, President Dwight Eisenhower federalized the National Guard and sent 101st Airborne troops to enforce the school's integration.

Number one songs in September 1957 included Paul Anka - "Diana", Debbie Reynolds - "Tammy", and Buddy Holly and The Crickets - "That'll Be The Day".
